Fire Marshal
Local Fire Marshal Duties
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the local fire marshal are varied and important for ensuring public safety and property protection within the community. The number of fires, as well as fire-related deaths and injuries, continues to increase across the country each year. This underscores the critical role that local fire marshals play in enforcing fire safety codes and regulations.
Statutory Mandates
Local fire marshals are responsible for enforcing many sections of Chapter 541 of the Connecticut General Statutes, as well as numerous fire safety codes and regulations promulgated under these statutes. They are required to inspect, on an annual basis, all buildings and facilities used for public service and all occupancies regulated by the Fire Safety Code within their jurisdiction.
Occupancies Covered
The Connecticut State Fire Safety Code covers all occupancies except one- and two-family dwellings and manufacturing premises.
The town of Old Saybrook requires both a Fire Marshal application and a Building Department application for the following types of work. Please note that you must submit a separate payment with each application.
- Underground Oil Tank Removal
- Tents (See Tent Permitting Checklist)
- Commercial Building Plan Reviews
Please note that Fire Marshal applications must be submitted in person to the Building Department.
